"The image of a Welsh woman wearing a shawl was made popular in the 1800s by Vospers painting that was exhibited in the Royal Academy in London in 1909. The comforting feeling of being cocooned whilst wrapped in a shawl was the motivation fro making this work. The image has been developed from sketched portraits of a sitter wearing a Welsh hat. These drawings were used as a source for reinvention. The contours and shadows were imaginatively re arranged and through playing with line and tone the final work was realised."
